Goals
WHAT makes founders and startup managers successful?
WHERE do they differ from corporate management teams?
WHO are the people with enough courage to start a company from scratch and
WHAT are their motivators?
We want to directly reach the people in startups in order to detect patterns of their strengths and weaknesses. How are we going to get there?
- By conducting a survey of the current situation
- By assessing the participants’ personality structure and researching the dynamics of a founders’ team
- By identifying and reducing eventual obstacles for women in the startup business
- By generating profiles for individuals and their teams
- By suggesting ideas on how to improve teamwork as well as personal work efforts
We consider the results to be extremely beneficial for the growth and professionalization of startups.
Methodology
The study is based on a sociodemographic as well as a psychometric survey, identifying the participants’ patterns in terms of learning and thinking styles, motivators, professional interest, and personality traits.
The sample group comprises 800 startup founders or managers and is selected according to the startup definition by the Austrian Startup Monitor 2018:
- Younger than 10 years
- Significant growth
- Innovative (products, technology, services)
Questionnaires
Questionnaires
Additional to a sociodemographic survey, participants are asked to fill in a psychometric questionnaire, named Founder Check. This tool is a well-established multidimensional profiling instrument that allows startups to fill their open vacancies in a more efficient way.
After analyzing the 4 personality dimensions mentioned above, our assessment tool furthermore helps to create a personal profile for each participant.
Motivation
This subtest is based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Alderfer’s variation of the ERG model of motivation, Herzberg’s two-factor theory of motivation, and McClelland’s concept of learned needs.
Learning & Thinking
This subtest is based on Anthony Gregorc’s Mind Styles model, which differentiates between 4 learning styles: Concrete Sequential, Abstract Random, Abstract Sequential, Concrete Random.
Professional interests
The test is derived from Holland’s Occupational Theory (RIASEC) on career choice and career path. This includes 6 types of personalities: Realistic (Doers), Investigative (Thinkers), Artistic (Creators), Social (Helpers), Entrepreneurial (Persuaders), and Conventional (Organizers).
Personality structure
This subtest is based on the Big Five personality model, which includes 5 dimensions to describe the personality of the individual: openness, extraversion, friendliness, neuroticism, and awareness.
The uniqueness of this multidimensional test is that unique profiles are provided as a report. These profiles are delivered in the form shown in the examples below.
