What is HR in 2020?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, Human Resources is defined as the department of an organization that deals with finding new employees, keeping records about all the organization’s employees, and helping them with any problems. But it’s so much more than that. 

While some connect the start of the HR industry with the industrial revolution, people management had already been popular in ancient societies, especially in the army’s organization. Now just as in the past, a strong team is the key for winning battles (and market shares) and the HR department is the business function that brings this about.

  • In the past century: the tendency was to minimize the cost of HR and to manage employees at the lowest cost possible.
  • Currently: the trend is going in the opposite direction, employees are seen as important stakeholders and job satisfaction is often taken into consideration.

What is the current role of HR? 

Considering that

  • Employees value job satisfaction and the meaning behind what they are doing;
  • Company culture has become a reason why to refuse a job opportunity;
  • Job environment is a key factor in decision making;
  • Job satisfaction has an influence on performance, productivity and efficiency.

You should take those points into consideration

  • Core Department

    Make HR a core department in your business

  • People Centricity

    Give attention to your employees, invest in retaining them and offer them the opportunities to develop with and within your company

  • Training, Motivating and Directing

    The focus goes beyond hiring, it’s all about training, motivating and directing employees in order to optimize their productivity and promote professional growth

  • Evaluate performances

    Give regular feedback to develop the potentiality of every employee

  • Company Culture

    Develop a clear set of values and norms and make sure that they are interiorized into your company

  • Actively listening and communicating

    Work on conflict resolution, trust and try to empower employees, with an ongoing communication

People are a key factor to remain competitive and the role of HR is consequently focused on contributing strategically to manage the organization’s talents. Make HR the core department of your business!
